Location and history

Mikołajki is located in the area called “Land of the Great Masurian Lakes”. The small town is located on both sides of the estuary connecting the two lakes: Lake Mikołajskie (500 ha) and Lake Tałty (782 ha). Lake Mikołajskie has a direct, natural connection with Lake ardniardwy (10,970 ha), the largest lake in Poland. You can also get to Mikołajki by waterway, namely from Giżycko, Ryn, Ruciane-Nida and Pisz.

Where Mikołajki now lies, in the very oldest, ancient Prussian period, there was a settlement whose inhabitants were engaged in fishing, weaving, felling of trees and logging. Mikołajki is first mentioned in historical documents in 1444. At that time, a certain Wawrzyniec Pruss of the Grand Knight of the Crusader Order, Konrad von Erlichshausen, was awarded a piece of land near the church village of Mikołajki.

The name of the village comes from the name of the patron of the church, Saint Nicholas. During the time under Prussia, the city's name was Nikolaiken. Saint Nicholas (in Polish: Mikołaj) was a patron of sailors and waterways, and his name was thus associated with this initially modest, Masurian village. By 1726, the city had grown so much in importance that it was granted the market town rights of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I.
