Location and history

Gołdap is located in northeastern Poland, northeast of Olsztyn.
The name derives from the Baltic language Old Prussian and can be translated with “the river in the valley”.
To the north, the urban area adjoins the Russian Kaliningrad enclave.
The river that runs through the city (cf. the city name) in a northerly direction is called Gołdapa.
