Zamość is located in southeastern Poland, Lublin County.
The plot of the city of Zamość was laid down through a decree from the chancellor and field lord Jan Zamoyski in 1580. The city was planned as Jan Zamoyski’s (1542-1605) family property, a good for him, his friends and the surrounding area, a fortress intended to protect Poland's eastern border, and finally as a center for arts and sciences. The city and the fortress were designed and built by Italian architect Bernardo Morando in the late Renaissance style. The city was surrounded by bastions, pierced by 3 city gates. Business life unfolded at Store Torv, Vandtorvet and Salttorvet.
Today, Zamość has about 66,000 inhabitants and is the most important cultural, educational and scientific center in the southern part of the Lublin region.
