Location and history

The town of Opole is located on the river Odra, in the county of Opole, in the historic region of Silesia. The city is the county capital and district center; moreover, the city itself has a district status. Administratively, Opole city and county is centrally located in Silesia with the Lower Silesian County to the west and the Silesian County to the east. Historically, Opole belongs to Upper Silesia (ie the eastern part of Silesia) and is one of the oldest and largest cities in this region.
The city gained market town rights in the early 13th century – at least before 1217.
